In the original, a duet for 2 cellos, the first part of which has been slightly altered for interplay with the double bass, while the second part has been completely tailored to the double bass. The two instruments constantly play the themes to each other, most of which are diatonic and can thus be played well by the double bass in the sounding register. Particularly noteworthy here is the second movement, in the middle of which the double bass shines with a longer cantilena that has a romantic, rapturous mellifluousness that makes one think this melody was written directly for the double bass.
