The double bass quartet, which lasts about 7 minutes, is the only work by the Frankfurt composer dedicated to the solo double bass. Composed in 1983, it was premiered in 1984 by students of the Hochschule für Musik in Frankfurt a. M.. In fact, it is certainly one of the most difficult pieces in the double bass literature. It demands the greatest virtuosity from all 4 musicians. The music itself adheres to a freely treated tonality. Hessenberg comments: "Of course I try to compose independent music, but I write the word <new> in small letters. (In: Kurt Hessenberg - Beiträge zu Leben und Werk). Who dares?
